With Coachella comes some groans, some mind-altering musical performances, and also some magnificent art. This year's line-up packed in Skepta, Sampha, Lady Gaga and Kaytranada to name a few. But were they the cynosure of all eyes present?
Maybe not. A 50 foot tall sculpture designed by Nigerian-born, Brooklyn-based artist and designer (and Globetrotter family), Olalekan Jeyifous conquered hearts, minds and bodies this year. Dubbed 'Crown Ether', Olalekan's newest design was birthed out of his longstanding interest in experimental - and experiential - public architecture. The work explores the “relationship of the terrestrial to the sublime". According to the Cornell-trained architect, the treehouse-like sculpture symbolizes “a coming together of people around the music and the arts."
Formerly an Artist-in Residence at the Headlands Center for the Arts and in the Visible Futures Lab at the School of Visual Arts, Olalekan is a seasoned architect and designer whose works have been exhibited worldwide.
