g check - jan sober

October 02, 2020

In these trying times, G-Check is a Globetrotter wellness check on creatives around the world.

No matter what part of the world you call home, 2020 has been a doozy, to say the least, and the creative industry has been one of the hardest-hit. Just ask Jan Angga, co-founder of menswear label Jan Sober. "Things have been really challenging right now," Jan admitted when Globetrotter met him at his Studio in west Jakarta and took a sneak peek into his Autumn/winter 2020 collection, But he's not afraid. instead, he remained optimistic and challenged himself to be more innovative while giving back to his community.

As a designer, I’m never really satisfied with my work
— Jan Sober

Thankfully for Jan Sober, around two years ago, the brand had planned ahead and created their own webstore which has proven to be a lifesaver amidst the pandemic, as it has allowed the brand to sell their products directly to their customers through a simple and intuitive format without having to depend on their traditional brick and mortar partners. "We can reach our customers directly, so it has really helped us right now."

Over the years Jan Sober has evolved into a consistent source of progressive timeless pieces, but he refuses to stop there. "As a designer, I'm never really satisfied with my work," he said. "We need to see how the industry in Thailand is really growing, you know. I think we in Jakarta are way behind compared to them."

As Jan and Jan Sober continue to learn to grow further, the brand still finds the time to give back to the community by initiating "Jan Sober for Humanity". The charity project saw Jan Sober converting half of the production capacity into producing non-medical masks and APD for the frontliners and needy civilians.
