Next is Julian Rosefeldt (Germany) who will launch his project, Manifesto, starring Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett, for the first time in Indonesia.

The exhibitions will run until May 30.

From the organizer:

Museum MACAN launches its 2020 program with two extraordinary projects highlighting the importance of video and performance with two leading artists from Germany and Indonesia: Melati Suryodarmo: Why Let the Chicken Run? and Julian Rosefeldt: Manifesto from 28 February – 31 May 2020. The two exhibitions will provide a platform to open up dialogue on cutting edge contemporary practice in a way that is rarely seen in Indonesia

Melati Suryodarmo is one of the most unique Indonesian artists known for her physically-challenging and long-durational performance works. Why Let the Chicken Run? is Melati Suryodarmo’s first ever solo exhibition in a museum, featuring significant works from over 20 years of art practice, including 12 performances that range from 15 minutes to 12 hours. Over 13 weeks, some of her most challenging and acclaimed works as well as artefacts of past performances, photography and historical video documentation will be on view. This exhibition will spark a conversation about the body, our memories and deep explorations of what it means to be human.

Also launching is Julian Rosefeldt: Manifesto, a 13-screen multimedia video installation that sees Oscar-winning actor Cate Blanchett assuming 13 different roles, while reciting some of the most notable artists’ manifestos of the 20th century. The presentation in Museum MACAN marks the Indonesian premiere of Manifesto.

A comprehensive program of talks, tours and public programs will bring audiences into direct dialogue with the artists and their ideas, including an Angkringan-style Artist Talk with Melati Suryodarmo; an Open Lecture with Julian Rosefeldt; a new program called the Open Debate series, which will allow audiences to publically debate key issues such as ideas of the body in contemporary art, as well as a Video Montage Workshop, which is organized to support emerging practitioners to further explore and develop their ideas. Julian Rosefeldt’s Open Lecture, Video Montage Workshop and few other public programs are organized in collaboration with Goethe-Institut as Program Partner.
