For most of his career, Bobbito Garcia aka Kool Bob Love has been the man in front of the camera. He has been—among other things—a basketball player, coach, DJ, radio personality and announcer; additionally, he's also an author and sneaker designer.
While it seems that he leads a pretty exposed life, Bobbito has revealed that there's still a stone left unturned. But that, too, will change with his upcoming documentary, Rock Rubber 45s.
Previously, Bobbito has directed two independent documentaries. Doin' It in the Park: Pick-Up Basketball, NYC, his feature debut, documents the outdoor basketball scene in New York, while Stretch and Bobbito: Radio That Changed Lives offers a retrospective look at the legendary hip-hop radio program "Stretch and Bobbito" that was co-hosted by Bobbito. The latter is available on Netflix.
Having "caught the bug for filmmaking," Bobbito continues his streak with Rock Rubber 45s. It's his third documentary and the first one that would chronicle his life in the hope of "impacting audiences and [his] community on a deeper level."
"I've had setbacks in my life throughout, ones that even my most intimate friends don't know about, but now will," he says. "My hope, and goal, is that viewers will be inspired, and motivated, after peeping it."
To achieve that vision, Bobbito has set up a Kickstarter page where he hopes to raise $30.000 to fund the production and distribution of the movie.
Billed as "a cinematic odyssey exploring the connectivity of global basketball, sneaker and music lifestyle" through Babbito's eyes, Rock Rubber 45s explores his youth dealing with "mistreatment, educational quandaries, identity and loss as well as his ascension to self-determination as an adult freelance creative."
Bobbito has long inspired many and affected the growth of footwear, hip-hop and sports industries with a variety of projects he has presented so far. It'll be interesting to discover what really makes the man tick in this documentary.
