norblack norwhite on injecting 90s energy, indian tradition & diversity into their clothes

April 27, 2020

Globetrotter revisits our conversation with NorBlack NorWhite, the Indianfashion brand on celebrating 10 years in the game.

During our trip to India in 2018, we visited a private studio belonging to Mriga Kapadiya and Amrit Kumar, the two young designers behind one of our favorite fashion labels, NorBlack NorWhite (NBNW).

The Indian fashion brand, which celebrated its 10th anniversary in April 2020, was founded after the duo moved from Toronto to Mumbai in 2009. Being exposed to diversity and listening to mostly hip-hop and RnB while growing up, Mriga and Amrit channeled the 90s-era energy, style and bright popping colors, fused them with modern silhouettes, then combined them with classic Indian handmade textiles. Everything is made with the hope of reinterpreting and maintaining the art forms, artisan communities and ancient techniques that have been disappearing.

In our conversation, Mriga and Amrit talked about transitioning back to India from Toronto, finding inspiration in the traditional Indian textile, running a women-led business while building NBWB into a platform that represents and tells the stories of people and women of color.
