There’s nothing like beatmaking and sampling that could drive Kevin Samuel aka Whoosah’s creativity forward.
Just like most young producers these days, the 21-year-old beatmaker from Indonesia started his career in the music scene by publishing beats on Soundcloud, until one of his tracks got noticed and then featured in Jakarta’s underground music compilation Dentum Dansa Bawah Tanah (literally translates to “Beats of the Underground Dance“).
With the help from record label Pepaya Records and music collective Noisewhore, Whoosah is ready to release an album this December, titled Ground Space.
The album has been released on cassette and will be available digitally. And just like a cassette, Ground Space has a two-sided concept. One is GROUND, which contains tracks with an “earthly” landscape; the other is the more adventurous SPACE, which aims to take the listeners into the cosmic space.
The track “Upperground” is chosen as the first single from Ground Space. The two-minute-and-three-second number instantly brings a nostalgic and joyful feeling. The song comes with its animated collage music video by Yogyakarta-based video maker, Bayu Pratama. In the video, as the familiar rhythm of Rah Band’s Sam The Samba Man (which is sampled in the song) is mixed with fast-paced drum beats, the music is juxtaposed with clips of Japanese anime and a running cheetah, adding to the nostalgic vibes.
