Based on the acclaimed novel of the same name by Tan Twan Eng, The Garden garnered not only positive reviews during its festival run, but also an award and multiple nominations at the prestigious Golden Horse Awards for the crew and cast, which include Malaysian actress Sinje Lee who plays the main character Teoh Yun Ling.

Set in the post-World War II Malaya, the plot follows Yun Ling, a survivor of a Japanese labor camp, who's looking to build a memorial garden in her sister’s honor. She ventures into Cameron Highlands, where she meets a mysterious gardener, Nakamura Aritomo (Hiroshi Abe), who accepts Yun Ling as his apprentice. As the story unfolds, Yun Ling finds herself embarking in a forbidden love affair with Aritomo as she tries to manage her feeling of hatred toward the Japanese.
