After a successful premiere at Sundance Film Festival last January, a documentary about the life and work of Yayoi Kusama will finally get a theatrical release in the US. And no one is probably more relieved that the writer/director/producer Heather Lenz, who has been following Kusama’s work and even started developing the film since 17 years ago.
The film, titled Kusama - Infinity, takes viewers on a journey through the Japanese artist's eventful career; from her beginnings to present, and everything in between. Today, Kusama is one of the most popular artists in the world. She's largely known for her Instagram-able polka dots and also infinity rooms, one of which can be found at Museum Macan in Jakarta. The 88-year-old has also opened a museum in Tokyo and become the subject of a children's book last year.
Even so, only a portion of the admirers of her art knows that her signature style is the result of her mental illness. Showing Kusama going to her studio from the mental institution where she lives, among other intimate scenes, the documentary will hopefully shed some light on the healing role of the arts.
While the date of the film's release still hasn't been specified, we think it's going to be as fascinating as Kusama's art. If people are willing to stand in line for a long time just to spend mere seconds inside her infinity rooms, they'll probably really looking forward to grab a seat in the theaters for this film.
